Ductile iron sand castings are used for automotive crankshafts, suspension brackets, gears, and other parts that withstand impact and alternating loads. Ductile iron automotive parts are lighter than gray iron and stronger than steel, making it the preferred material for automotive lightweighting.
Gray iron is suitable for vibration reduction, low cost, and moderate load; Ductile iron is suitable for applications that require high strength, impact resistance, and toughness. When selecting, first consider the load and working conditions before deciding on the material grade.
